Kensington Primary School Prospectus

Physical Health We believe that health is the foundation of all learning. We provide a broad range of physical activities from Reception to Year 6. Through the delivery of our Physical Health curriculum, our children will develop their physical competence; grow in confidence; become motivated learners; and begin to understand the importance of physical health. Our Physical Health curriculum is delivered through four core strands: Fitness Twice a week our children take part in fun fitness lessons for thirty-minute periods to improve their overall fitness levels. Skills Mastery of basic skills is the foundation of learning and can be broken down into two key areas: Skills for Life and Sports Skills. Sessions to develop these skills take place weekly and children have opportunities to apply their learnt skills throughout. Skills for Life Skills for Life aims to develop the foundations for our children to achieve life-long physical ability through developing their agility, balance and coordination. A mastery progression of skills in movement, balance, flexibility, spatial awareness and swimming from our Early Years Foundation (EYFS) to Year 6 allows children to develop and build upon a foundation of basic skill and prepare them with the essentials necessary to progress through our Sports Skills curriculum. Sporting Skills As children master elements of our Skills for Life curriculum they will begin to access our Sports Skills curriculum. These fundamental skills (which include skills such as sending; receiving; dribbling; kicking; and rolling etc.) are the foundations required to effectively play in specific sports. Synthetic Phonics We use the Ruth Miskin Literacy (RWInc.) synthetic phonics approach to teach children in Reception and Y1 the phonetic knowledge required to read and write. Occasionally, children will continue to need phonics lessons in Y2 and even further up the school, particularly if they join us with no or little English. Through this scheme we teach knowledge of sounds and how they link to letter names, as well as key words. We recognise the need to develop fluency when reading and the need to develop comprehension skills. These skills are also taught directly through our daily RWI lesson. Please speak with your child’s teacher if you have any queries or concerns about your child’s learning and to find out how you can support your child at home. 22
