Learning in Year 5

Year 5 are currently reading 'The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe', the second book from The Chronicles of Narnia. This is our core text for Spring 1 and we have been creating some persuasive 'Wanted' posters based on the book. We will also be developing our journalistic writing skills next week, as we begin to plan out and write newspaper articles based on the book. Our weekly spellings continue to be uploaded onto Google Classroom each week and please ensure that your child is accessing the spellings provided.
In Maths, we have nearly completed Division and will now be moving onto Decimals, Fractions and Percentages. We still have some Year 5s that are not completely secure with their times tables. It is so improtant that they practise these regularly (including accessing Times Tables Rock Stars), as there are so many strands in Maths where they will need to continue to utilise and apply these.
In Science, we have been learning about 'food miles' and carbon footprints. In Technology, our Year 5 pupils are producing some excellent house designs on Google Docs' drawing features and researching a range cross-curricular topics. This includes creating our own 'Pop Art' examples and our RE work about other cultures and religions.
In Physical Health, our current Skills for Life unit is Gymnastics. In Communication, we have been learning about a range of compound words, portmanteau words and also learning about what makes effective listeners. During the first week of the Spring Term, we also completed various interesting Emotional Health lessons, including learning tools, identifying our strengths, etc.
We already have some exciting events planned for Spring 2, which includes an educational visit to the Purfleet Heritage & Military Centre (linked to our English core text), as well as World Book Day/ Book Character Dress-Up Day, amongst others.
