Learning in Year 4

In Y4MW this week, we have been using non-fiction texts to find information and make justified inferences. The children have been developing their skills in locating key facts, using evidence to support their ideas, and clearly explaining their thinking.

These important life skills help the children to better understand what they read, think critically about texts, and build confidence when sharing their ideas in class discussions.

We have been linking these skills to our class text, Jemmy Button by Alix Barzelay, which is inspired by the true story of a boy from Tierra Del Fuego who was brought to England to be “civilised.” The children have explored the historical context of the story and thoughtfully considered how Jemmy might have felt during his experiences. They have demonstrated empathy and maturity as they reflected on themes of identity, culture, and belonging.

In Maths this week, we have created a Fraction Street to consolidate prior knowledge before beginning a two-week block exploring and developing a deeper understanding of the world of fractions. Our times tables knowledge continues to thrive against national benchmarks, and we test ourselves each week to build fluency and confidence.

In Skills for Life, we are developing our core strength and conditioning through movement and balance activities. The teamwork and positive routines on display are a joy to behold.

In Science, we have welcomed some new members to our class — our class butterflies! The children will have the opportunity to observe their life cycle up close and explore the wonders of metamorphosis before releasing them. Alongside this, we have Science Week coming up, where the children will showcase the wonderful work they have been completing in our current topic on solids, liquids and gases.

This is just a short snapshot of some of the learning that has taken place this week. Should you have any questions about any of the above, please feel free to speak to either myself or Mrs Malik before or after school.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend and a happy spring.
