Kensington Primary School

Physical Health Curriculum

This term, Year 2 – 6 children at Kensington have been focusing on developing their fundamental throwing and catching skills as part of the physical education curriculum. They have explored a variety of throwing techniques, including underarm, overarm, and chest passes, learning how to adjust their throws based on distance, height, and accuracy depending on the situation.
In catching activities, they have practised using both one and two hands to catch a range of differently sized balls, both stationary and moving. This has helped develop their hand-eye coordination and reaction speed. The children have also learnt the importance of positioning themselves correctly to catch successfully and with control.
Many pupils have shown fantastic improvement in both their throwing accuracy and catching consistency. They have also been developing teamwork and exploring basic strategies through the mini-games played during lessons. It has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm and determination throughout.
These essential skills provide a strong foundation for many team sports and physical activities, and we look forward to building on them as the term progresses.
Meanwhile, the Year 1 children have been developing their gymnastics skills, with a focus on posture, balance, and strength. They have been exploring different ways of moving and holding shapes, learning how to travel with control and perform balances both individually and with a partner. Through activities such as stretching, rolling, jumping, and holding poses, they are building core strength and coordination. It’s been fantastic to see their growing confidence and enthusiasm as they develop these important foundational skills.
We warmly encourage parents and carers to stay engaged with their children’s learning at home. Take a moment to chat with them about what they’ve been doing in Physical Health and the skills they’re developing. These conversations help reinforce their learning and highlight the lifelong value of staying active and healthy.
