Year 6 at Museum of Docklands

Year 6 has had an exciting and educational week filled with both outdoor fun and enriching classroom activities. On Fridays, as part of the school’s OPAL programme, students enjoyed extra playtime, with tree climbing being a favourite activity. The children had the opportunity to explore nature, get active, and enjoy the fresh air, providing a wonderful balance to their busy school week.

In addition to all the outdoor fun, Year 6 also took part in an engaging educational visit to the Museum of Docklands. The children learned about the British Empire and how the London Docklands played a key role in importing goods from various countries within the empire. The museum visit helped bring history to life, offering a deeper understanding of the importance of London in global trade during the empire’s height.

The visit also led to important discussions about the darker aspects of history. The children explored the role of the transatlantic slave trade and how London’s docklands were connected to this tragic chapter. It was a powerful and thought-provoking experience that sparked curiosity and reflection.

To round off the day, the children enjoyed a walk along the docks at Canary Wharf on their way back to school. They marvelled at the impressive architecture and had the chance to relax by the stunning fountain, reflecting on everything they had just learned.

With so much knowledge gained, Year 6 is now eager to bring these new insights into their English writing lessons. It’s clear that this week has been both fun and educational, and we look forward to seeing how the children will use their experiences in their lessons this half-term.
