Learning in Year 5

In Year 5, we recently had our first educational visit, which was to Mudchute Farm on the Isle of Dogs last Friday (19th September). The venue is the perfect place to examine stark contrasts of environments in such close proximity to each other, which reflects the work and discussions around our first Year 5 core text, called The Varmints. With the classroom chromebooks and links in Google Classroom, the Year 5 pupils have been able to access all the pictures taken on the visit, to support their diary-writing content, which is also linked to the English core text. We are already seeing some amazing writing outcomes and we'll be keen to showcase these in both our classes and display boards.

In Maths, we have so far focused on both place value and number properties; two essential and all-important 'building blocks' within the subject, to begin the new academic year with. Our Year 5 pupils are already demonstrating high levels of proficiency in Maths-orientated online platforms such as Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS). In Science, we have already covered flowering and non-flowering plants and in our second topic, we have been learning about how healthy bodies positively impact health minds, learning about neurotransmitters such as endorphins etc. In Tech, we have been learning about how systems work and generating our own examples on programmes such as 'Scratch'.

For PE, our Autumn 1 Skills for Life focuses on developing exercise and fitness techniques, as well as stamina, through various activities such as running/ sprinting, skipping, high-intensity games, etc.

Year 5 also sees the pupils first experiencing our fitness software called MyZone, which monitors their work rate during various exercises in the main hall. In Culture this term, we have been covering Art and Sound (Music). In Art, we have focused on the 'Africobra' art movement, as this unit effectively fits in with our Autumn 1 Emotional Health topics. In the Sound unit, we are covering various music genres, including hip-hop.

Spellings, vocabulary linked to the core text work and other relevant work/ revision is uploaded onto Google Classroom.

We look forward to celebrating all these achievements and outcomes with parents and carers just before the half-term break.
