Kensington Primary School

Learning in Year 5

The Spring Term brings with it some amazing events and activities to both celebrate and enhance English, particularly Reading. First of all, we have National Storytelling Week next week, celebrating a range of stories from other cultures and making links with other subjects (such as dance, creating lyrics with thematic vocabulary, stories with morals which link to our Emotional Health Curriculum, etc). We have signed up to various national events related to this as well, some of which will be live-streamed in classes next week.

Secondly, each year group will have a display related to Reading outside their classes, for both parents' evenings coming up in 2 weeks' time (Wednesday 11th and Thursday 12th February). These will include examples of Reading-related work, year group expectations, some of our current English core texts, etc. It is so important that our children read regularly and your support with this is greatly appreciated. Further to this, we have also arranged a book fair for both parents' evenings. Classes will be able to visit the book fair on both afternoons and will be open for parents and children from 3:30pm to approximately 6:00pm. The books sold by this company are usually well below most of the books' recommended retail prices.

World Book Day (5th March) is always a highlight for our children and staff. As usual, we have applied for our school's allocation for World Book Day book tokens and are currently arranging a range of fun, engaging activities for the first week of March. Of course, no World Book Day at Kensington Primary would be complete without a Book Character Dress-Up Day! There will be a book prize for the best-dressed pupil in each class too.

Finally, kindly ensure that your child/ children are regularly reading both their specific, levelled reading books (from our Collins Big Cat series) and the reading book that they have selected from our school library.
