Learning across the school

Year 3

It has been wonderful to welcome the children back after the summer holiday, and to see how ready for learning they are.  This week we have started reading Elisabeth and Her Box of Colours, a beautifully illustrated book that is inspired by a real-life artist.  The children have learnt about different colours, and lots of new vocabulary related to the book.

In science, the children learnt about the skeleton, what it is, and why some animals have them.  They even got to make their own mini skeletons out of paper.  Next week, they'll hopefully make a full-size skeleton for each class out of cardboard.

In maths, we're revisiting place value and learning about hundreds.  In active maths, we made human place value charts to explore this topic.

Our topic this term in PE is movement, and the children have begun learning and developing how to hula hoop.  In the coming weeks, they will develop their stamina through skipping, running and other athletic activities.

If you want to find out more about your child's learning, please ask them or their class teacher.

Curriculum

At Kensington, we believe that children's lives and imaginations are enriched by learning about, and doing, art.  Year 1 will develop their drawing, colour mixing and painting skills, while also learning about other artists, such as Vincent van Gough and Percy Kelly, who used colour creatively in their art.

Meanwhile, Year 3 will learn about Impressionism and the work of artists such as Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro. They will then create superb paintings of the River Thames, in the style of this art movement.

Year 4 will learn more about an art movement called Romanticism, and the work of  Caspa David Friedriche and Joseph Turner. We look forward to seeing their landscape paintings in this style.

Year 5 will also study art this term, looking at Cubism and the work of Pablo Picasso.
