Year 5 EH Neglect Lesson
In Year 5, we have been learning about neglect, an important topic that helps us understand how to keep ourselves and others safe.
We learnt about what Neglect means and why it happens.
It happens when a child’s basic needs are not met, and it can take different forms, such as:
- Physical neglect – Not having enough food, clothes, or a safe place to live.
- Emotional neglect – Not getting love, support, or care.
- Educational neglect – Not being sent to school or helped with learning.
- Medical neglect – Not receiving the healthcare or treatment needed.
We also role-played different scenarios to help us recognise the signs of neglect and think about how to respond. Some signs of neglect include:
- Wearing dirty or unsuitable clothes for the weather.
- Often feeling hungry or tired.
- Not being cared for properly or feeling lonely.
- Missing school frequently without a good reason.
If you or a friend experience neglect, it’s important to speak up. In the UK, you can:
- Talk to a trusted adult – A teacher, family member, or school counsellor.
- Call Childline (0800 1111) – They offer free and confidential support.
- Contact the NSPCC (0808 800 5000) – They can help protect children at risk.
- Call 999 in an emergency – If someone is in immediate danger, the police can help.
Learning about neglect helps us recognise when someone needs support and understand what to do to keep ourselves and others safe.
